INTRODUCTION

Since history, solving man’s problem has led to the manufacture of various devices and machines useful to humans. These devices that assist man in different forms including computation have their roots in the ancient time and have continued to evolve throughout the ages. The most important of these devices is the computer.

Computer helps in doing many tasks, as well as calculations. You can also perform many other activities with the computer. But have you ever imagined how computers were developed and evolved over the years to what you presently know as computer? The development of computer spans through various ages of technology and this include:

  1. Early counting devices
  2. Mechanical counting and calculating devices
  3. Electro-mechanical counting devices
  4. Electronic counting devices and modern computer
  5. Generations of computers

DEFINITION AND EXAMPLES OF EARLY COUNTING DEVICES

Early counting devices are things that were used in the early days to perform arithmetic operations such as addition of numbers, subtraction and multiplication.

Calculation is a part of our daily life. Without doing calculation, a person cannot make his budget of things, money, etc. in writing or by using some calculating devices. In early days, there were no calculating devices to do calculations. So, people used such things which they found in their surroundings, like fingers, sticks, stones, cowries etc. for doing calculations.
